Is a career really possible in this economy or should you just be trying to get or keep the job you have?

Tip for best answer: M$1.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Anything is possible.
I once heard a certain Mahalo CEO say, on TWiT, something to the effect of "In a down market, invest in yourself".
Now is a REALLY good time to hold on to the job you have. Seriously. BUT, don't stop there. Work on your skills or learn some new ones. Try new things. Take affordable risks. Don't stagnate. Every job is at risk right now, so see if you can get to a point where that job isn't ALL you have.

A Career is always possible. In fact, this is probably a good time to choose schooling over work, which could help you move forward in your career. It's probably not a good time to just quit your job and hope for the best, but if your career involves free-lancing or starting a business, you could use this time to do your research, attract a client or two, get your feet wet. Then, when things start picking up, you're ready to move.

I guess it would depend on the type of career. I actually started a new career 8 months ago in the IT field and even got a $5,000 bonus at the end of the year. So anything's possible.

NEVER SAY DIE!

Keeping a job is a great suggestion and while your at it turn it into a career. I might also suggest you keep your head up and eyes on the job market for fall back positions. If you loose your main job then you could always have at least a fall back.

I do believe that a career is possible in the current economy. I always advocate for having a new job lined up before you leave the one you have, and that's good advice whether the job market is hard or soft.

It never hurts to get your resume into shape and go job hunting, even if just for the experience to sharpen up your resume and interviewing skills.

Friend of mine just got a new job in the same field (structural engineering), a very nice offer, that will require relocation. Relocaiton these days is tougher than it once was, especially if you have a spouse and family. It's so hard to sell a house and to relocate spouse's job. But it's still possible, and if you are a singler person who is a renter, it's actually pretty easy.

Also, if you know you're working in a sinking ship, for a company that is laying off a ton of people, best to start looking sooner rather than later.
