Beagles are very smart and energetic dogs and can be trained BUT Beagles are a hunting breed of dog. Hunting breeds like a fox hound or a beagle have a tendancy to put their noses to the ground, find a scent and off they go. When they are in this "hunt" mode they really don't hear anyone or any commands. Keeping them on a leash/chain is a good way to keep them around, another way is a training collar - I don't mean a shock collar necessarily but there are collars that transmit a vibration and the level of the vibration can be dailed up or dialed down depending on the circumstances. Of course if you have a yard an underground fence will work well also. Good Luck and have fun - they have got such great and individual personalities!

Beagles are often headstrong dogs. Like most hounds, they're independent and aren't given to slavishly following direction. On the plus side, they're intelligent dogs who have no trouble picking up training when they feel like it.

Also, a word of warning. Beagles can be the most vocal of the hounds. This can be good or bad, depending on how you look at it.
If you live in an apartment, your neighbors might not like it.
If you want a good watch dog, it's great.
(I personally love the different sounds they make!)

Beagles can be very stubborn dogs. When you train them, you need to be very firm and patient. Whenever they smell something, they usually just take off to explore it and won't listen to you telling them to come back. They will follow a scent and won't watch out for cars or other dangers. For this reason, be sure to keep them on a leash when you are outside. Beagles can be difficult to train for many people because they are so strong willed.

Beagle are easy to train and love to be cuddled. Easy going and just pussycats. The only thing with a beagle is that if they get outside without a leash and they pick up a scent...they just focus on that scent and will go to find it, no matter how much you call them back. That is just the breed. My aunt has two of them and its fun watching them.

I had a Beagle but had to get rid of it as it became very aggressive and would not let my husband get into bed. It began to snap at people too. I think it was because it was not trained at an early age. Training and consistency is the key.

Beagles are great dogs! They are fairly easy to train. They are sometimes stubborn and can lose attention and interest. However, with consistency and positive reinforcement a beagle pup will train (just like most puppies). Here are some websites with tips:

They are really nice dogs and are great with kids.

They are easy to train for tracking, but for every day things, such as leash training, housebreaking, etc. it takes a lot of consistency and repetition.
