Yes, a 401K is a good investment over the long term. Start as early as possible during your working years. If you change jobs, most companies allow the old 401K to be rolled over into their plan. Take maximum advantage of any company matching funds to your deposit. Last don't assume the plan will self manage, watch your investments and change when market conditions are trending down. Have a balance distribution of equity and fixed incomed funds and 4 to 5 years before retirement, allocate your funds to low risk funds.
