I guess its all what you would like to use it for. The nice thing about the classic is its 160GB which it says equals 40,000 songs or 200 hours of video. Its been really helpful to my one friend b/c he edits video for a living and uses it as a external hard drive besides a music player. Plus if you know how to grab music you can expand your library easily when you go to your friends house. I'm sure there are sites or people out there that know how to do this.
As for the touch, its nice it has all those apps, but they're pushing it as a gaming device which I don't know how it handles complex games like Role Playing Games or First Person Shooters. I consider them complex as more coding goes into them because of the interaction as opposed to something like bejeweled or scrabble (which I've played on my girlfriends iTouch).
If you had to make a choice between the two I would go with the classic. You'll have a device that will become a nice device for a music library.
I would have said the iTouch, but I am really ticked they did not put a camera on it. I was all set to buy one until I found out they squashed that idea. I have a PSP. Thats my gaming device. I was looking to have something that could be a jack of all trades device.
So if you're looking for something with gaming - I really recommend a DS or a PSP. A PSP has better games than the iTouch, can play movies, and music and store photos. So the great games are a trade for the apps.
BTW sorry to bring in the other devices, but the iTouch and classic are just so different and were easier to compare to the others.
