Since I don't have iTunes, I quoted this from iPod Observer:
"The application that controls how the Mac responds to how to handle what happens when a camera is plugged in is the Image Capture application, not iPhoto (and that?s the one kicker here-if you make this change, iPhoto will not automatically open for any camera you plug into this computer).
To change the behavior:
1. Open Image Capture (in your Applications directory)
2. Open the Preferences panel (Image Capture > Preferences?)
3. Change the drop down following ?When a camera is connected, open:? to ?No application?
iPhoto will stop opening but, iTunes won't open automatically. Re-install “iTunes Helper” which is neccessary to get it opening again automatically:
Sync, then uncheck the box for the option to open iTunes when that iPod is hooked up, sync again, then check the box, and sync one last time. A dialog box pops up that asks if it’s OK to install “iTunes Helper”. Say “yes”. Now it works."

Easy 'fix':
open iphoto
go to preferences
in the general tab, click on the drop down menu beside "Connecting a camera"
select "No Application"
I tried this with my ipod. I downloaded a new picture, it wanted to sync to iphoto when I connected. I changed the setting in iphoto t the setting i described above. Got a new pic from the web, and plugged the ipod, didnt want to sync this time.
Hope this helped.

How do I stop iPhoto from opening when I plug my iPod in?
I have an iPod Touch. Whenever I download pics on it, and then plug it into the usb port, iPhoto automatically opens. I don't want to import the images. And even if I did, unless I delete the images, it will just open the next time.

You would think that as fancy a device the iPhone is... Apple would have spent just a little more time smoothing out the user interface on the computer.

I agree. They mainly focus on aesthetics, rather than functionality.

Its a 'touch-screen' mobile device. Of course they focus on functionality.

The reason it opens automatically, is because you have saved a picture or taken a new picture with you iphone and it wants to sync. There is no "issue" or "bug" Its like syncing music to your iphone automatically. Its a feature. Not everyone likes all the features. Easy 'fix':
open iphoto
go to preferences
in the general tab, click on the drop down menu beside "Connecting a camera"
select "No Application"
