I would like to suggest Griffin's tunebudsmobile. It only costs $40 and sounds decent. It's an in-ear type with mic, no adapters needed (which i like). You can take calls by pressing the mic button just like the original iPhone earphone.
Likes:
-no adapters needed
-mic works, calls are clear in both ends, answer button is handy like the original
-buds stay in the ear better (3 sizes to choose from)
-plugs into the 1st gen iPhone, no adapters-mentioned that already
-black color (you won't notice how dirty it is vs white) you may/may not like this
-sound is decent IMO, but then again I usually listen to podcast more than music. I can't really compare it to expensive sets like Shure or Bose. I say minor tweaks can be made in the Equalizer settings.
-very affordable. If it breaks, you won't feel as bad as when you spend over a hundred.
Dislikes:
-non that I can think of. I've been using it for about 4-5 months already.

Even their lowest end product is head and shoulders above Bose and the rest of the competition.

Which earbuds would you recommend for the original iPhone that behave like the original ones but have better sound quality?
The earbuds that came with my original iPhone are busted and I'm looking for a replacement. One requirement is that the sound must be good. The other requirement is that I be able to take a call while using them, which mirrors the functionality of the original iPhone's earbuds.
I've tried the Z.buds from Zagg, and sent them back because the sound quality sucked for the money. For $20 more, Bose makes an in-ear earbuds product that blows the Z.buds out of the water--but there's no way to pick up a call while listening.
Oh, and I found these (http://www.bose.com/controller?url=/shop_online/headphones/mobile_solutions/on_ear_mobile_solution/index.jsp) but I am not interested in the on-ear or over-ear design. Specifically looking for in-ear/earbuds design.
(Implicit requirement: must fit the original iPhone with the recessed jack.)
Any suggestions?

Spend the extra money and upgrade to Shure. Even their lowest end product is head and shoulders above Bose and the rest of the competition.

Do you do much talking with the $49.99 adapter that you have to purchase separately, or do you only use the earbuds for listening? If talking, how's the voice quality for the other person?

I haven't used the mic adapter.
I have a friend with it and have talked to him over the phone when he's been using it. It sounded as good as if he was using the handset directly.
The sound quality of the mic wasn't any better than any other headset, but it has to be pretty convenient if you listen to music on your phone to have the mic inline.
