My iPhone 3G goes from fully charged to dead in about 4 hours about once a week. Any suggestions?

1) my office is in a 3G fringe area. Tried turning off 3G to keep it from constantly switching back and forth between Edge and 3G, but problem persists.

2) Have fully charged the battery and let it completely drain several times to restore the battery's "memory", as per the Apple store's instructions.

3) Have tried turning off various combinations of Location Services, Wifi, 3G, etc. Just when I think it's fixed, it does it again.

4) Love my iPhone, but would really enjoy throwing it out the window too. Perhaps throwing it out the window will improve battery life?

5) Should I throw it from my second story office window, or perhaps find a taller building? I could probably throw it from a 8th story window if that would be better.

I've heard from other sources reporting similar problems - after your iPhone dies, does the rear of it feel hot/warm to the touch?

If it does - your iPhone is failing to go to sleep. One cause of this is an application failing to let the phone sleep (but this is rare), however some people have put this down to a software glitch in the iPhone firmware.

If this isn't occurring every time you charge the phone, I'd suggest this is the most likely option, and the only course of action is to complain to Apple and hope they sort it out in the next firmware update!

Yes, that's exactly what I've noticed... it feels warm when this is happening. I read about Safari being the most likely culprit, and several articles online suggested completely closing the application by holding the button for 8 - 10 seconds. However, the 'genius' in the Apple Store told me this was false.

The strange thing is... it will start to get warm and drain the battery even when I have restarted the phone and not used Safari in days and days. I probably use the Mail app more than anything... maybe on certain days it just doesn't shut down completely and tries to run background network processes?

Weird.

Yeah, this is exactly what I've seen reported elsewhere!

I'd not heard about Safari being the culprit though, I'd heard that sometimes the phone carries on in its 'wake' state just without showing anything on the screen, killing the battery and turning your iPhone into a nice compact radiator!!

All I can suggest is rebooting the phone on a daily basis - I used to have this problem on my original iPhone (now own a 3G), and just used to restart it every morning. I found this helped with both performance and battery-drain issues.

Maybe that's the secret behind Apple not letting any background processes on the iPhone.

The battery inside the 3G is a lithium ion battery, this kind of battery doesn't suffer from memory effect.... so I don't know what Apple's been smoking when telling you this but it's just wrong.

Did you try turning the auto brightness off and choose a low brightness setting? that does help a bit.

Also make sure it's set to go to sleep within a minute of inactivity, that will save some battery as well.

Mophie ( mophie.com ) make some great Juicepack for the 3G, that would help a lot.

Regarding throwing the iphone out the window, well, I think you would get more satisfaction throwing it against a wall with the anger you have built up instead of gently drop it down and seeing it fall.... either way, please pick up the battery once broken to recycle it....

Good suggestions -- I do have the sleep set to 1 minute, but I haven't tried to lower the screen brightness.

Here's what Apple referred me to regarding exercising L'ion batteries:

The kid in the Apple store added the part about "memory" though.

I see, well, the kid at the apple store didn't know what he was talking about. Nicad batteries are the type of battery that have memory issues not lithium ion.

It really won't matter to charge or discharge the battery completely, it will just make go thru cycles too fast.

Two things you need to do however:

1: Never leave the battery charging when it's fully charged already... it could overheat the battery.

2: Never leave the battery empty for days... Lithium ion don't like to be left with no charge at all.

The rear of your iphone feels warm if you've used it for a while, you're using the battery, so it warms up and that's normal. The same happens to laptop computers for example.

I would agree that restarting your iphone and restarting it, might help, especially if you're not going to use for a while ( at night ), but keep in mind that restarting it demands a lot from the battery..... seriously... a whole lot.

I would start by turning everything to manual. Turn off the 3G, wifi, Fetch/Push new data, bluetooth (major drain), location services, etc. Turn it all off and leave just the phone service on. If it solves the problem, add them back one at a time until you encounter the problem again.

The only other thought that I have would be restoring the phone, which will take forever - but may help, if you haven't already done it.

The only thing I didn't try to turn off one at a time was the Fetch/Push... good suggestion. I'll try that, and if it doesn't work, will do a restore.
