I read about this same story a few months back. If you ask me, I believe its more of just getting a defective unit than the iPhones themselves being faulty. There were other stories like this boy who got burns on his leg due to the iPhone exploding on his pocket. I mean come on, if something like a piece of electronic hardware were to blow up on my pocket, wouldn't I get something more serious than mere burns? Not like I'm able to tell if the burns were actually serious or not, but an explosion or something like that would have caused more damage to his leg IMO.
I know people who have owned iPhones eversince and never complained anything about them having overheating issues.

iPhones have been exploding and burning people! Has anybody had an iPhone explode on them?
One guy in the U.K. threw an overheating iPhone out of his back door and watched it explode and fly 10 feet in the air. Another iPhone in the Netherlands blew up and set a car seat on fire.
Does any-one out there have first-hand experience of an exploding iPhones?

No. AT&T will never let me be a customer again. The only exploding iProduct I've seen was deliberately microwaved, an iPod. I'm sure the iPhone would explode in a like manner. As always, link goodness:

Mobile device explosions causing injuries are unfortunately an old story, but in many cases those explosions can be traced to faulty phone batteries that are often cheap knock-offs added by the user. The battery on the iPod touch, however, is not replaceable by the user.

I'd like to know a lot more before I believe that there is a real problem.
In my experience the devices only get warm (and not hot even then) when they've been running an intensive application for a long time. And that doesn't happen when they're in your pocket.
But Apple is not winning any friends by how its handling these cases.
