Sadly, I probably will not be making a purchase this time around, and I'm an original iPhone owner (4GB). While this is most definitely the best iPhone ever, I didn't see this as a blow-my-socks-off game changer--it's just a great update to a great device that will be great for a lot of people.

The other part of the reason I'm not dropping the cash is because of the data plan pricing. I already pay $20/mo for the data plan on the original iPhone, and an extra $5 for 200 text messages that should have come with the data plan. Now I'm supposed to pay 33% more per month for a data plan that's not as fast as advertised to begin with?

I don't think so. While I hate AT&T land lines (pricing, confusing billing, nickel and diming practices) I'm not yet there with AT&T Mobility...but I'm starting to approach that point with their pricing schemes. $30/mo is outrageous. $20/mo for unlimited data (and TEXT!) is the sweet spot and would make most people happy.

I think the roof is going to be blown off this mother when that 5-year exclusivity contract between Apple and AT&T ends in 2012. In the meantime, let's hope AT&T pulls its head out from where the sun don't shine and put together a pricing model that makes people FLOCK to their service, not talk trash about it.

One last thought: you get what you pay for, and if so many people including myself think that AT&T sucks, why not lower the price and attract more people? I couldn't imagine how many iPhones would be sold if they cut the TCO (total cost of ownership) by a third.

The regular iPhone 3G is now available for $99 for 8GB model.

That's presumably designed to reach the more cost conscious folks.

The iPhone 3GS is, like you say very nice indeed, but the features on it aren't so compelling that unless you're a gadget-o-phile with spare cash there's a reason to rush out and get it.

Absolutely not - until AT&T isn't the sole carrier. AT&T and I have this little disagreement...which I won't go into here. Suffice it to say, I'll NEVER use AT&T again.

If my current carrier had the iPhone, I'd get one. I've played with some co-workers original and 3G iPhones, and I definitely want one - but not if it means going with AT&T.

I will, but not right away. I'm only a year into my contract on the iPhone 3G, so will wait until I can get the new one at the new/upgrade price (which is, I believe, in about 7 months).

It's kind of a bummer, though. I'm visually impaired, and the new accessibility features are pretty compelling to me (not to mention all the other new features).

But, basically, I'm cheap, so I'll wait. ;-)

I want to once my verizon contract expires and when AT&T actually gets MMS and tethering working. IF I had a current iPhone 3G I wouldn't be jumping for the GS. The improved battery life, transfer rate, and new camera features aren't worth the price. I'd prefer to use a nice point and shoot instead anyway.

Although it'll get more attractive when some nice apps start using the compass so when you point the camera at building it could frame tags around it.

That's assuming that the compass will work in all orientations and not matter if it's flat like a real compass... If the phone had to remain flat to use the compass then I'd stick with the 3G.

No, I am definitely not upgrading my current 3G phone. Unlike the first upgrade plan which enabled 1st gen users to pay $15 to upgrade their phone for the subsidized cost, AT&T is charging "non-qualified customers, including existing AT&T customers who want to upgrade from another phone or replace an iPhone 3G, the price with a new two-year agreement is $499 (8GB), $599 (16GB), or $699 (32GB)."

$600 is WAY too big of a commitment to get a few more bells and whistles. Although voice command, autofocus and the video camera are pretty sweet.

Even though I have a 3g and I'm very happy (and attached to it) I would still be willing to pay up to $200 to buy the 3gs simply because of faster speed. The more throughput, the better for me.

The reason I am holding out on the iphone 3GS (I have an original 8gb and my contract ends next month) is because I want to see how much the tethering plan will cost. If I upgrade to the 3G or 3GS I will have to pay not only the extra $10 month for data, but also for text messages (I currently get 200 and that is all I use), and then possibly for a tethering plan on top of that.

I am hoping some pressure is put on ATT by the pre to lower their data plans so that they come out with a $40/month unlimited data/text/tether plan.

Until then I can live without video, GPS, and the few other advantages of the 3G phone.

Yes I am. I don't own an iPhone right now, though I own an iPod Touch. I could use the extra 8 gigs (my iPod is only 8 gigs) and I'm loving the new features (video, 3 mega pixel camera, faster processor, paging it when it's lost even if the volume is off, compass, etc...).

I plan to buy the iPhone 3G(S) 16 GB in the fall close to my birthday. Hopefully my boyfriend will replace his cracked screen iPhone with a new iPhone so we can purchase a family plan.

Before the time comes, I will be making the purchase of the new OS 3.0 for $9.95 for my iPod Touch.

I am an owner of the original iPhone and bought it the first day it came out two years ago. I skipped the 2nd generation and was extremely excited to get the 3rd, but I'm not 100% sure anymore. Well actually, I'm about 90% sure but it would have been great if there were a few more key features on the new iPhone, such as video conferencing, and a cheaper service plan from ATT. There is nothing positive about ATT... if I upgrade, I will be paying more for the service plus I have to pay $36 in 'upgrade' costs. Not a very pleasant user or upgrade experience, but what are you going to do?? The phone is a nice upgrade and probably worth the $199 hassle to get a new one.

I have the original iPhone, and am unsure if I am going to upgrade. I am curious to see how my current iPhone reacts to the upgraded operating system. I also need to see what the plan pricing would be.

On a good note, my boyfriend just got a 3G at the new "discount" price, so I will have a basis for comparison as far as speed goes.

I've been waiting for the announcement. The only problem is the AT&T plan is wildly more expensive than my current plan. I'm still on the fence. I'd really like to get one but only time will tell.

Nope. I love my iphone but the AT&T part of the deal is becoming more and more of annoyance. I'm not going to pay more money to tether when I already pay an 'unlimited data plan' and the phone is quite capable of it. Not to mention they won't have the MMS capability that's coming to iPhone3.0.

Yes, I plan to get the 16 GB version for $199. I was an early adopter of the iPhone, buying the 1st gen on the day it came out. I didn't upgrade to 3G when it came out as I primarily used wi-fi on my iPhone so the enticement of 3G speeds didn't do much for me. Plus, if you have a 3G, you have to pay AT&T more for data than if you have the 1st gen. However, I lost my 1st gen a couple weeks ago, so I really have no choice but to buy a new one (iPhone withdrawal is driving me crazy). I am tempted to get the $99 3G, but for me it's worth an extra $100 for double the speed, double the memory, the better camera with autofocus (but still no flash!), and the video capabilities. I don't like having to pay the AT&T data plan prices though.

The Phone is not the problem. The problem is being forced to pay a monthly subscription to At&t as the sole wireless carrier.

80 dollars a month for cell coverage is too much
