What is the best thing you've discovered while using the internet?

We've all discovered one thing or other over the years while surfing the web. Sometimes we stumble upon something that just WOWs us into disbelief. That wow factor is what I love about the internet.

What have you discovered that gave you that wow while searching?

I'd say the very best thing is the possibility of discovering friendships with people we would not have met otherwise. Personally, I have now been friends with someone for many years who lives several states away from me, but she is the one person I can turn to like a sister. We are in contact every week and very involved in each other's lives, and I can honestly say she is one of the most special, loyal, decent people I've ever encountered in my life.

Even if you don't find a particularly close friend online, just the fact that we can interact with people from all around the world through Internet forums and the fact that we have such open access to things going on in different countries is truly an amazing thing. Then of course there's the advantage of having all the crazy, funny, weird sites to look at as an endless source of entertainment.
Asker's Rating:
• Even though the answer wasn't exactly what I thought I was looking for it does have a wow factor.

No where else is it possible to interact with so many different people at one time on a regular bases. We don't always have to like the people we talk to online but we can't deny the fact that each person enriches our lives just ever so much, some more then others.

Because of the internet I met online people from all over the world. Together with them I have managed to explore my own bias, joys and interest. WOW, what a world we live in when we can come together and learn so easily about others

I am an avid competitive chess player. Before the Internet, one had to purchase very expensive books and videos by Grandmasters in order to receive a quality lesson at home. Now, chess lectures are everywhere on the Web, and one simply needs to type in the information he or she would like to learn that day, and set aside an hour or so! Computers really have revolutionized the game.

I love chess also. I can't say that I'm that competitive with it like I used to be but I do enjoy playing. I think my biggest problem is I can't find anyone I know that is good enough to beat me. LOL My brother played me once for over 4 hours and lost 15 out of 15 games and he is the best player I know personally. LOL

Sure! H-Danielsen has a WONDERFUL series on YouTube about the Polar Bear variation of Bird's opening here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RoOHRP44ub4 ALL the videos are top-notch, and he is a real GM.

Another excellent place to find videos: http://chesslecture.com/

And www.chess.com has a HUGE arsenal of instructional chess videos for free! Thanks for your interest, philipy! Oh, and flyingbird... we should play sometime! :)

Ouch, I forgot to add the Polar Bear search for YouTube! Here it is, and there are a huge amount of videos on this subject. Of course, you can find a plethora of other helpful chess videos on YouTube, but this series stands out in my mind!

@skwerly... thanks. Those are rather cool!

Also... now I know what Bird's players are afraid of. :)

@flyingbird65...

Try chessclub.com or playchess.com. You can play free as a guest, and still find a number of decent opponents. But sign up for the paid service, and there are plenty of players at all levels right up to and including Grandmasters!

I had downloaded CCleaner a number of years ago and have loved it. I first heard about CCleaner from a forum. I had a virus on my computer and was looking for ways to get rid of it. A forum member suggested it and even mentioned by name the exact virus I had. After using CCleaner the virus was gone.

Thank you for reminding me about CCleaner and I hope others too look into getting it.

I answer on behalf of all those women too shy to talk about it.
And I answer on behalf of those young innocent girls and boys who are ignorant of their bodies.

One of the biggest wow factors was porn.

For women it has been like the burning of a bra.

Yes, there are issues with pornography online, plenty of issues. BUT without the internet women were left feeling embarrassed or unable to acquire pornography for their own enjoyment. And women are sexual creatures too.

Prior to the internet it was a really one-sided affair, men were catered for but not women. Now, we are catered for, we do have somewhere safe to experiment and learn and develop our own sexuality if we choose to.

There are articles about this but its always a mix of the dangers and the benefits to womens equality etc. Yeah, more internet porn means more girls taking their clothes off but again, you have the benefit of knowledge and showing some people things they never knew they could feel.

Pornography has been with us from the beginning, the internet has just expanded it and made it more approachable for those that were too shy or embarrassed to try.

Some will always disagree but I say its a good thing.

I like this response and for me it is part of that wow factor I get from being online. I am continually amazed at what people say, how they think, what they believe and how they act when online. Even more so their willingness to freely speak out where otherwise they may not.
