Online apps/software for student/acamedics management?

Hello,

A friend runs a musical instrument coaching institute and I am exploring online webapps that will allow management of students, providing student logins, online media (videos, pdfs) for lessons

Have you looked at Joomla? It's a Content Mgmt System that does ALOT, but the interesting thing is the community 'plugins' called Extensions number almost 3000 and are mostly free, ranging from voting apps to slideshows and multimedia apps.

It's also compltely free.
