If all you plan on doing is browsing the web and playing music, (I'm assuming that's what you are doing with iTunes), then you are probably a good candidate for the netbook market. Netbooks are the low end of laptop computers, and I believe Dell has a few models. They aren't as powerful as regular laptops, and your current computer is probably more powerful than a new netbook, but they should be able to handle the tasks you mentioned. Also, if you do need more power, you could also use your current laptop for more advanced tasks. Netbooks are cheaper than other laptops, and often enjoy longer battery life. Currently, they come with Windows XP. If you are interested in buying a netbook, I recommend waiting until October 22nd, because that's when Windows 7 comes out. You will then start to see netbooks powered by that OS. (If you want a more powerful laptop, then I recommend buying one now that includes a free upgrade to Windows 7, so that you can use Vista until 7 matures. More powerful laptops come with Vista on them.)
I hope this helps!

Also, you might want to wait a few months because the next Windows Windows 7 will be coming out soon. If you buy now, it will have Vista and then you will have to upgrade in few months if you want the newest operating system.
If you want a new one for 300-400, it will have to be very basic and the performance will not be very good. I don't know how much you paid for your current laptop, but I don't see a reason to downgrade. Overall my suggestion is to keep the one you have at least until the end of the year.

That being said, we only use Dell's now. When I needed a new desktop model I went to the Dell site and clicked on their outlet store link. They are not all refurbished, some are just opened and never used, or refused by the person who originally ordered them. I took my time and watched, and then saved hundreds and got a much better system, with a full warranty.
Look for what you want, then check their outlet store. You can get a lot for a little. And they categorize on their main website by functionality. They also have great sales reps. Give them a call and talk to them about your needs. They know what their systems are capable of and can point you in the right direction.

I need a Dell!
I have been thinking about getting another laptop. The one I have is somewhat new, I had this one for about one year. But I've decided that I hate it and want something simpler. The only thing I ever use it for, is the internet. And a few applications like iTunes and stuff.
I want a Dell, but it's so hard to choose. So could you help me choose one? I would like one starting around 300 and 400 dollars. I saw one of their commercials and liked the one they advertised. It doesn't have to be a Dell, so if you find other brands that fits my description, please let me know.

• Thank you, I think I will wait to get another laptop. My current one is working great, I just want something more personal. I might decide to get a netbook, I just wish they were stronger.

What are you going to do with the laptop you have? It's only a year old so it should still have plenty of life in it. What makes you think you will be more satisfied with a different laptop? Also, you might want to wait a few months because the next Windows Windows 7 will be coming out soon. If you buy now, it will have Vista and then you will have to upgrade in few months if you want the newest operating system.

Not sure why you got an unhelpful on this answer since you make some great points.
It would be helpful to know what computer is currently being used so we know what would be more of an option for the user. If a computer is only a year old it is hard to believe that there would be a reason to replace it since most laptops are the same in functionality (so one isn't really going to be more simple). In the price range a very basic computer with low performance will do what the user wants but my concern with that is a limitation on growing in the future with the hardware.

You have some good points, how long until they release windows 7? Although I like Vista. The reason I don't like my current laptop is that the left mouse button feels like it's broken, it's clicking sound is all wrong.

Windows 7 is coming out October 22nd 2009. Sorry to hear about your left click button. Maybe it can be fixed. I would recommend using a mouse actually. I find a mouse to be much easier to use than a touch pad.

if you are going to use it mainly for internet then you should probably get a netbook, they are usually cheaper too because they have a lower spec than 'proper' laptops, also they are very small and portable, i personally would get an asus Eee, they're around 400 - 600USD a bit pricey but they are the best on the market and well worth the money. hope i helped good luck with choosing one :)

This response is certainly an opinion you are welcome to have, but if you feel this way why not go into more detail with your answer so it is helpful in making a choice? Why doesn't the user "need" a dell? Is there some problems you have had with them in the past? Do you have a better company you would suggest? The more details you can include in your answer the better your chances of getting a "best answer" and slimer your chances of being marked as "unhelpful" :)

While I recommend that laptop customers be open to all brands (except for a couple I have declaired unreliable), this user has obviously chosed Dell to buy a laptop from, and therfore your answer is unhelpful. You could make it helpful by stating why "No one 'needs' a Dell", and by actually answering the question anyway, but as it is, your answer is definitely not helpful at all.

If the problem is the left mouse button on the track pad, then just buy a logitech wireless optical mouse. If the problem is the left mouse button as you have discribed then the mouse will resolve your issue. Better to spend $30.00 - $50.00 then 300-400.00 on a down grade. At least this way the laptop should last you till 7 comes out. For a mouse I would recommend one of the nanos or the V320. Good luck, I really would say just stick with the laptop for now, get then mouse and after 7 comes out sell the laptop try get at least $100-200.00 for it and get a new one if a new one is what you really want. Good hunting.

I agree with a lot of the other posters that your existing laptop has a lot of life left in it. If you truly don't want it anymore, I won't talk you out of it, but I suggest selling it. It may still be under warranty as well... just something to look into. That being said, we only use Dell's now. When I needed a new desktop model I went to the Dell site and clicked on their outlet store link.
