Lets assume.

You have data in column A and B. You want to delete cells 4a, 5a and 6a and move the data in 7a and 8a and 9a up in that space (all without deleting anything in column B). I hope I am right in assuming this is what you want to do.

Google docs does not seem to make this easy. The link below asks about inserting cells but it can also apply to deleting cells too.

Now, I had never used Google docs before today. I just played around with it for a while and the following is what I came up with.

In a normal spreadsheet document you would delete cells 4a, 5a, and 6a and you would get the option to either move the cells below it or at the side of it into that space. In Google docs it seems to work a little differently.

From what I can see your best option would be the following: -

- Highlight cells 4a,5a and 6a by holding down the left mouse button and selecting the cells just as you would do in a normal spreadsheet document. Right click on those selected cells and choose the option to clear selection. This would clear the data in those cells but leave the cells there.

- Highlight the cells you want to push up into those cells. Put the cursor to the bottom right edge of the highlighted area (where i have the arrow) and when the cursor changes to a hand your hold the left mouse button down and drag the cells into the space you have just cleared.

There may be a better way but for now, I hope this helps.

I would suggest cutting column B and pasting it to the front of the document (before column A), then clicking on the first thing you want to delete, holding shift and clicking on the last part of that row.

It doesn't look like there's a CTRL(deselect) option in Google Docs.
You could also try downloading Open Office and editing there instead of through google docs. It's free :)
