Yes, you can use the hosting space to make backup.
But you have taken hosting from which company ? Is it reliable ?
Mostly they reserve that space for you as long as you pay them and hosting service for you is active.

Can web hosting space with HTAccess protection safely be used as an off site backup.
I have a website with a great deal of space left over on the server that I'm not using.
My plan is to create a directory on that server and protect it with htaccess, then use FTP to upload the data from my local machine to use the space as an off site backup.
Is this secure enough?
