I am looking for interesting cyber crimes that stick out in your mind.

I am looking for 2 cyber crimes. I am in a classroom of 30+ people, and I dont want to just google search, and come up with the same ones everyone else is doing. So I was wondering if anyone has something that sticks out in their minds that fits the criteria thats follows.

The first case should deal with a Canadian US or other country with similar legal system crime involving single or few computers and the second case should involve the Internet or a crime using a network that occurred across many countries or a large geographical area.

I will also tip people who give interesting answers that isn't chosen as the best.

Here's a good one for a Mahalo Answer:

John Schiefer is currently serving 48 months in prison for creating a malware.

Interestingly, Schiefer was a programmer at Mahalo and heped to build this great system.

The first one I can think of is The WANK worm in 1989. Some hacker created to attack NASA. It did quite a few damages and it's cost was in millions of dollars.

Another one I can think of that happened recently is the Denial of service attack targeting twitter and Facebook.

Here's an extra one just in case, in 1999 the Ministry of Defense satellite was hacked, possibly by Southern England.

The interesting thing about theses attacks is that no one got caught and no one knows who the attackers were- still.

The one that pops into mind are nigerian 419 scams, in which the victim receives an email say they have won or acquired large amounts of cash and in order to move the funds they require credit or bank account information. Most of these scams come from Nigeria and many people that fall into these scams lose $100 to $20,000 on average.

Another one that annoys me is fake goods, imported mostly from china and traded via eBay. Although, the buyer may not be the victims, the companies that make the legitimate items lose money because they cannot compete with the prices of the fake goods.

These may sound boring without your average "evil" hackers with shaded glasses working in a dark room with computers, but they are interesting if you take a deeper look.

I'm not really asking what is a crime. I am doing a report on a specific cyber crime that took place. What the evidence was, the charges, and all that stuff.
