What's the best way you know of generating free internet traffic to a Website? Must be absolutely free of $, spending time is OK!
I'm interested as i'm trying to promote my own website and wondered what techniques you'd used to generate free traffic to your website?
I don't mind a technique that involves spending time, but I don't want techniques that involves spending $ in this question.

I had several good answers but overall I felt this was best.
Posting on forums that are applicable to your website. Yesterday someone posted a link to our site http://www.istgolf.com in a golfing forum and we saw a 25% increase in traffic to the site. Getting high value bloggers to write about your site can also generate a lot of additional traffic but that can be harder to accomplish.
Please note that spamming forums sites with links to your site is generally a bad idea, any promotion you do has to be related to the topic that you are talking about.

Thanks for that, i've tried this with negligible results to date.
I guess the all important factor though is which forum you choose and the applicability to your sites subject matter.

I should have included a link to the forum post as an example. I don't know who posted it but we couldn't have done it better ourselves if we tried. He is one of our happy golf simulator owners. Here is the link http://www.golfwrx.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=275836&st=0&start=0 Notice that the member who posted the link has 363 posts which means he is an active member of the forum which gives him credibility.
I've been working for 6 months now and still not satisfied. If I knew the anwer, I'd be much happier.

depends what kind of site, for my free porn portal, i update entries on wikiporno, submit to directories, link trade, for my business blog, i submit articles to some of my favorite sites that have similar content to get my name out as well increase pagerank. Submiting articles and offering to guestblog for others as well as asking them to guest blog for you is an excellent way. Write a wikipedia article, make an aboutus.com page, and posting in forums are also good ways.

Be pretty aggressive. Use Twitter, it's great for generating traffic, i tried it a while back when iPhone was trending and with a site that never ever got a visit suddenly 24 a day, which is quite considerable for the 4 tweets i did.
Maybe use retweet.it for Retweeting for more traffic.
Other options: Go SEO! Make sure your website is on top in your interest area, make sure linkpages link to your site and so on. It'll take some time to see results, but searches that end up linking to your page is the best traffic because they are interested in your subject.

Some methods:
* Add hundreds of people on Twitter who will hopefully then follow you, and who's friends will begin to follow you, and post a bunch of updates. Then, once you have a decent amount of users following you, advertise your site, and in comes the traffic!
* If you're a consistent and well-respected poster on a popular forum, advertise your website on your signature and visitors will come.
