A few months before these three Americans were charged of espionage by Iran in July 2009; an American journalist named Roxanna Saberi was charged of espionage by Iran, back in April 2009. She was arrested in January 2009. She was first sentenced for 8 years imprisonment, but later the sentenced was reduced to 2 years suspended sentence. She was released in May 2009.
Now, the severity of punishment depends upon the gravity of the charges and the testimonials, evidences, witnesses etc. But as far as I think, they will not be punished with death sentence. Perhaps a long imprisonment.
The last outcome is given above.
