The NHL plays on rinks measuring 200 feet by 85 feet. International competitions are most often played on "Olympic" size rinks that measure 200 feet by 98 feet. International hockey also uses a larger goalie crease and lacks the Goaltender Trap Zone that is used in NHL hockey to keep the goalies from going into the corners to retrieve pucks. International play generally uses "no touch" icing as opposed to the NHL which uses "touch" icing in order to avoid the injuries associated with "touch" icing e.g. Minnesota's Kurtis Foster's broken femur March 20, 2008. Because the NHL plays on a smaller rink the style of play tends to be less focused on skill and finesse and more focused on toughness and grit.

International hockey differs from the NHL in a few different ways.

1. The rinks are Olympic size which means they are generally wider with more room below the goal lines and the neutral zone is also larger. This leads to more of a skating game with less emphasis on physical play. The NHL has room for all kinds of players and their skill sets however in international play most players should possess above average skating ability.

There is more of a tendency to pass the puck around and try to set up a perfect play than to simply shoot as often as possible, which you find much more of in the NHL. Again, the rink size is most likely the reason for this.
