If you can find a realistic one (hard to find), they are very nice looking, and hard to differentiate from real trees.

It's also fun to go pick one out with family and getting to go through the experience of dragging it home either by hand or on top of your car. Somehow, picking up a boxed tree in a shopping mall just doesn't have the same charm...

I use an artificial Christmas tree -- they take the annual expense, search time, maintenance time, cleanup, and disposal costs out of the holiday fuss. You can even leave them up for a longer period of time before undecorating if you need to, without having to worry about them dying and shedding needles all over. I grew up with an artificial tree and then got my first real tree with college roommates. While artificial trees have gotten very realistic in looks, there's nothing that can match the smell of a freshly cut Christmas tree. It's also fun to go pick one out with family and getting to go through the experience of dragging it home either by hand or on top of your car. Somehow, picking up a boxed tree in a shopping mall just doesn't have the same charm...
