What do you think of the Pirate Party, its aims, and its chances of success?
The Pirate Party (connected with Pirate Bay) just won a seat in the European parliament. Their vision is:
"All non-commercial copying and use should be completely free. File sharing and p2p networking should be encouraged rather than criminalized. Culture and knowledge are good things, that increase in value the more they are shared. The Internet could become the greatest public library ever created. The monopoly for the copyright holder to exploit an aesthetic work commercially should be limited to five years after publication."
What do you think of the Pirate Party and its goals?
What effect will it have? Does it have any chance of success?

It's an interesting goal. But I'm not sure that creating a vast virtual public library is feasible.
In real, physical libraries, books are purchased from publishing companies, or from jobbers, but ultimately from the publishing companies, who in turn pay the author, the editor and all the employees responsible for helping in the publication of the book. Hopefully the author can then pay the mortgage.
So if everything is free, how does the author get paid? Or the music writer/performer? If there is to be no pay, with the author still write anything other than a private journal?
The whole problem is something the courts have been thinking over for a decade or more, with no solution in sight.

I think there needs to be a more clear outline of the pirate's mission for there to be any success. I'm sitting on the fence with this. I agree with @tracebooks whole heartedly. In all the reading I've done on this subject, I haven't seen a more specific outline other than what cnet and other stories on it have stated.
"The Pirate Party is focused on three main goals: "to fundamentally reform copyright law, get rid of the patent system, and ensure that citizens' rights to privacy are respected."
I bet all the Patent Lawyers are having a field day with this one!
I must confess that I have used pirate bay a few times, but I think that if this party where to have their ideals met, it would also change the face of how we create... everything! There would have to be some sort of middle ground. The reality is that there are too many people that make a living protecting other people's stuff, and I don't think they'll go down without a big fight!
