Typically, insomnia is mentally driven. We tend to worry about the past and future when we should be relaxing and letting go.

I way I let go of the mental gymnastics AND relax is to do a progressive relaxation. I start at my head and end at my feet and methodically relax EVERY muscle and nerve in between. Don't forget all the little muscles in your face and all your internal organs.

Mentally... recognize that there is NOTHING constructive you can do right now, so you can leave it until later.

1. you have any fears.

2. bit about your eating habbits

3. your daily routine.

Also, few good remedies which shall definitely help you are:

1. Do some form of yoga.

2. Eat at least a couple of hours before going to sleep and have a good nice walk afterward.

3. Take a glass of hot milk before going to bed.

I do hope and pray that these three things shall definitely help you. Keep smiling, peace and cheers.

For most people I always advise having a beer before they go to bed. Beer is relaxing and also puts people in a good mood.

However, since you have now specified that you are far below the USA drinking age, that won't work. Unless you live in some European country where you are allowed to drink beer, that would be illegal.

If you are only 12, I'd say just don't worry about it. When your body is tired enough you will go to sleep. It's not as if you had to drive to work, or even work for that matter. Everyone has their own sleep patterns, yours may not have settled down yet. Also, if you are 12, your hormones might be kicking in and disrupting your normal body patterns.

As a general thing, you might be sure to avoid candy and soft drinks before bed. Get some exercise during the evenings too, even if it's only doing some push-ups in bed. But mainly, just don't worry about it. Your body will sort it all out automatically.

If you are only 12 you should be discussing this with your parents, your family physician or you family therapist. The Mahalo Terms of Service clearly state you must be 13 to participate here on Mahalo Answers and Mahalo.com

I listen to music at a low volume level or some other kind of soothing music. Having my tv on while in bed helps too. Try reading, especially something boring, that will drop your eyelids in a hurry as well. Exercise before bed is not a good thing though, so avoid that a few hours before going to bed.

There is different types of insomnia: problem falling asleep, problem staying asleep, and early waking. I assume your problem is falling asleep.

If you are having problem falling asleep:

* no caffeine in the afternoon or evening
* keep a regular sleeping schedule
* no bright lights late in the day
* the rest is mainly mental: Your mind is likely preoccupied with something. You can get over your mental preoccupation by reading, listening to music, or watching TV while in bed. (computer games don't work)

Yep, not sleeping well or suffering from insomnia can be awful...my partner has suffered with insomnia for the last year.

What you need is an all natural sleeping aid, I recommend this one Melatrol Natural Sleeping Aid

I hope that helps.

Sex before sleep would be fine but just thinking of it in bed would be counterproductive

Here's what I've been told to do:
  1. Do not sleep in. Get up the same time every morning.
  2. Get up when you wake up even if it's earlier than you usually get up.
  3. Do not drink caffeine after noon.
  4. Do not take naps.
  5. Get regular exercise.
  6. Avoid eating within a few hours of bed.
  7. At bed time, turn out all lights, turn off all audio, and keep the room cool. We sleep best in dark, cool, quiet places
Good luck!
