I've visited Bali twice now and I come from Indonesia, so what I suggest is from my personal experience:
Almost all Balinese speak English, Japanese, and Germany aside from local language, so you don’t have to worry about language.
If you don’t have strong stomach and strong immunity, refrain from eating local food. Some of the traditional food are VERY spicy, and sometimes less hygienic. This is 3rd world country after all.
Are you visiting Bali and tour there by yourself or you join a group tour?
If you are joining the group tour then you are pretty much settled. If not, you can use local tour services to go to father places than your hotels. You can also rent a car and ask the driver to drive you to great places.
For the best activity in Bali:
- Watersports: if you want to surf, surf at Kuta beach where international surfing competitions are often held. Diving: Nusa Lembongan is one of the best place to dive. You can ask for diving lesson at Padi, a local diving school, or follow a cruise to Nusa Lembongan for all inclusive trip, watersports, lunch, etc. You can also do white water rafting.
- Culture: go to Pura Besakih and other temples. Watch Barong show.
- Shopping: Bali is famous for its art and handcrafted goods. Visit the silver handmade shops, Bali batik shops, and other handmade crafts shops.
- Spa: every hotel have good spa services, even the bases
- Nightlife: the best nightlife is around Kuta. There are hard rock Café, kama sutra nightclub, Musro, and many local bars.
- Rainforest: trek at the padi field, rainforest, or just go to Bali safari for your entertainment.
The last tips: haggle haggle haggle! If you can haggle at local stores, you can get discount up to 80%! 1 T shirt usually cost only Rp 20000 or Rp 30000 at most, except at department stores and other formal stores. You can watch the other tourists to see how low the prices can go. They usually give higher prices to foreigners than Indonesian, so beware of that.
Check out my pages Bali, Bali Hotels, Bali vacation. They are not finished yet but I hope to build it soon.
Belief me, bored will be the least of your problem and going home from Bali is the hardest thing you'll ever do.

• Great reply; probably left everyone reading instead of writing. I'm going with my family on a group tour. I'm looking forward to the beach, scenery, exciting new things and just having fun! I'll keep in mind on the food (though it oughta be a little similar to Malaysian food, eh?) and "haggling". Thanks for the tips! Terima Kasih! =)
