It's someone who is into off-label music--independent bands. People like this tend to be really into music, not for the fashion of it, but because they really like what they're hearing. They tend to be intelligent and not quite in step with the rest of the culture, so they may look a little different--maybe almost emo at the moment. Not unaware of trends but independent of them, whether it's music or fashion.

I agree with the above people, but like other groups, there is going to be a lot of wannabes that only dress as such to be thought of like that, like a poseur, who wishes he or she was indie, but isn't. You can start at the source and then go to the other "indie" definitions as well on urban dictionary.
