My best suggestion for finding music like something you are listening to -
http://www.pandora.com
Go to Pandora, tell it what you like and hit play. As it plays music similar to what you suggested, tell it what you are enjoying and what you aren't and, as the kids say, Bob's your uncle.

For something far lighter and more whimsical, check out múm:

The Orb's more ambient pieces may fit the bill too:

That's a playlist. That song, Oxbow Lakes, and Valley by Orb represent their more ambient stuff reasonably well. You may also like the Higher Intelligence Agency stuff in that playlist too.

Check out the artist 'Burial'. His music is electronic, ambient music that is more muted and quiet, rather than pulsing and loud. I have both of his albums and its great stuff for a rainy day or a drive by yourself. http://www.amazon.com/Burial/e/B00197I7GM/ref=ntt_mus_gen_pel

From a search, http://www.cdbaby.com an independent music site has a feature where you can search by the group name and you can often get recommendations of similar music and preview it. Here is the search for nine inch nails link http://cdbaby.com/found?allsearch=nine+inch+nails&submit= Creative Commons by Uglynoid
