He's quoted as saying "We just felt this was the right time." That seems to be the only thing he's directly said about why he's retiring. I think one can understand though, that after so many years of coaching, that you want to settle down and live a more comfortable, simple life. He's also never felt that football was "his life's mission" but just a career path.
