It's always a good time to visit a new country, and experience a new culture such as India. India is a fabulous place to visit. However, the best time to travel to India is during the peak season.

So, the best time to visit India for tourists is the winter season. During the winter time, you should take a trip to India. It makes a great holiday trip, so this window period is between October and March. During the cooler months of the year, when you won't have to worry about the heat of summer.

Another reason to visit India during the winter months is that they coincide with the celebration mood and festivities in India. In October - November falls Dussehra, Durga Puja and Diwali. Also in November is the Pushkar Fair (in Rajasthan), the largest cattle fair in India. In January is the Republic Day of India and Lohri - the festival of Punjabis. In March falls Holi, the festival of colors. Then there is Id, Easter, Christmas and a number of another festivals, each celebrated in totally Indian fashion. You can experience true India, in all its richness, by attending these festivals.

Here are some tips for traveling to India, as your health is utmost importance when traveling, so it's important to follow these tips:

Absolutely never drink tap water. Always drink bottled water, or better yet try drinking India's chai tea, as it's made with boiling water. If you are in a place that does not have filtered or bottled water (pina ka pani), then boil water for at least five minutes before drinking. This is the only way to ensure the water is safe to drink.

Make sure you take deodorant, as the same deodorants that we Americans use are not available in India.

Make sure to pack some toilet paper or better yet take wet wipes with you, as it's not something you will find on the road, as it can be scarce or nonexistent.

Be careful when eating off the road (dhaba). Fried foods are safe to eat only if it's fresh and you are used to India for a few weeks. Make sure you avoid eating anything that sits in water or sugary substances.

If you need medicines such as cough suppressants gel caps, take them along with you, as it may not be easy to find these in India. It's likely you will get a sore throat, so it's better to be prepared with the medicine than be without it. Take medicines that prevent nausea or travel sickness.

The best time to visit India for tourists is the winter season. The season lasts from October to February. It is a pleasure to visit India during these cooler months, when the heat of summer is no more. Around this time, the usually wet areas of Northeast also become dry, making it easier to travel there. Even the hot South India is blessed with cool weather and rain on beaches in this peak season for India.

Average temperatures in Southern India:
March - June - 25 - 32°C
July - September - 23 - 31°C
October - February - 23 - 30°C

You would want to do it in the Spring. They have so many wonder flora that the natural beauty in the Spring would be stunning. Moreover, if you go in early Spring, say around April, the weather would be PERFECT. You will love the country.

In south India it is usually hot. The entire area is considered to have a tropical climate. Remember that they do not have the same four seasons that temperate climates do. Instead of Winter, Spring, Summer, and Fall the Indians have Winter, Summer, Monsoon, and Post-monsoon. If you don't like hotter and wetter, Winter or Post-monsoon would be best. But, I went in summer, long ago, because it was part of a summer program at college. You may also find that other factors than the weather are more important. Again, this is a tropical climate, the differences are much less drastic than in a temperate climate.

Being a South Indian, I can suggest that you can plan your trip any time between November and March because the weather is pleasant and cool.

If you insist more, I would say Dec - Jan is better time to visit South India.
December - January is the 'Winter' season in Chennai(Madras).

If you insist more, I would say January is the best time to visit South India.
Usually, the monsoon gets over by Dec 15th. But this year, meteorological department is yet to announce officially that the monsoon is over.

If you are traveling to Chennai(Madras), then you will see lots of activities like ATP Tennis, Carnatic Music season, Pongal festival(Harvest Festival) during this time.
