To focus on the years 1962 to 1967, the Beatles music was one of the leaders of many talented UK bands. Among them included The Kinks, The Rolling Stones, The Moody Blues, The Animals, The Who, and Herman's Hermits.
Inspired by the happy upbeat tone and British bands’ success, US musicians started similar bands like The Monkees, The Doors, The Beach Boys.
These predecessors of the "boy band species” were typically 4-man bands. Some played instruments more than others, some had a different “gimmick, but all sung pseudo-love songs to make giddy girls scream and faint. It was quite the successful formula and still is.
