In your opinion, what is the next big social network service and why?

Twitter may still be far from its peak, but it is pretty well established by now. Is there an other up-and-coming service on the horizon? Please provide an explanation to why you believe your suggestion is the next big thing
Tip for best answer: M$2.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

I think Friendfeed ( http://friendfeed.com/ ) has a great potential to become the next big social network site Friendfeed has a lot of features Twitter doesn't have:

* Import al your social network profiles into one profile.
* Embed pictures & video's
* Like items & see items that your friends like
* Twitter directly from the friendfeed site.
* Create lists to organize your friends
* Create rooms to share information about 1 subject
* Add comments & start discussions with any friendfeed user

I think the next step in social networking is not a new site but a site that aggregates all your profiles.
Facebook will continue to be the biggest social network in the coming year. Twitter will continue to grow. But there's still room for new social sites

Twitter isn't THAT big yet but it will be. I don't think there's anything else that's remotely close to it.

When Congressmen are using it instead of paying attention to the future of our country, you know it's powerful.

I would think that facebook would continue to be the biggest social networking service. Its interface is clearly the best and until there is an option for a better large-scale social networking website, which there isn't currently, it will stay as the best service. (Which will probably be for another few years.) Also, its large amount of users that it has already will contribute largely to its success in the future and as for advertising, almost everyone already knows about it.

I agree that FB will stay the biggest for a while, but that's not really what I was asking.

I don't know if this is what you are asking, but I think location-based services will be the next big thing. Most social networking services are using location these days, and it's obvious to see why. For example, if you're twittering with your friends, you can easily see who else is geographically close to you, and you can go meet up. Or you are walking down the street and want to look for the nearest coffee shop (or pizza place, or free wifi), and you can easily find out. There are any number of new uses for these services that haven't been announced yet, but it's pretty clear it will be. So if you're looking for a company to invest in, tailor your search to some of them who are specializing in location-based services.

I agree that location will be important to any emerging service in this space, but what I am trying to get at is an actual web app. Perhaps one that is under development, maybe in beta? I'm sure there are lots of great initiatives that just need a little attention from the media to get started.

I think that someone is going to invent what I call a dynamic metatag. Here is how it would work.
I'm on Mahalo Answers and I ask, "What movie should I purchase this weekend?"
In the background is a program that tags my question. Lets say the tag is 0123456789mor. Now it gives me a tag like 0123456789mor (1).
Five people answer my question and suggest six movies. The movies are given the tags, 0123456789mor (2), 012...89mor (3), and so on. Within fourteen days, I go to Amazon.com and buy one of the movies. Amazon participates in the dynamic metatag program, so when I purchase something, an algorithm at Amazon looks to see if the movie has been recently tagged. It finds several tags including 0123456789mor (6). Now it checks to see if I have a similar tag. I do.
It discovers that the tag came from Mahalo Answers. When I make my payment a fraction of that payment (% or maybe a nickle) is transferred to Mahalo Answers.
In this way, social networks are linked to commerce sites and benefit from discussions of products.

Why someone? Go develop that dynamic metatag right now! What would you need to start?

I think thats too much for anyone right now... that just sounds extremely complicated, and it would also I think cost companies. Every website / company would have to agree to it in order for it to work. And in return I think online prices could go up, even if it is just a fraction, because of having to pay to another site.... I just think thats a bit too complicated right now. And i got halfway lost in the middle of that explanation you gave.

All right, I give up. What?

jentyree you are right. It is complicated and it will be costly. I just have a hunch that someone is likely to be working on this right now. Maybe they will be successful and maybe not.

The next big social network is going to be Hit Me Up, though it just launched, it is going like a weed on a hot summer day! Try requesting an invite, it might take a while though. http://signup.whatmakesu.com
