In your opinion, what defines the genre shoegaze, in one paragraph?
I'm doing a music project and would like to define some creative boundaries to help make it interesting. Can Mahalo help?
You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

I guess "shoegaze" wouldn't quite be a genre in itself, but would probably be more accurately described as a sub-genre of "indie" music. It could also be referred to as a "scene", as the main groups who were associated with it (Chapterhouse, Ride, Slowdive etc.) all came from the Thames Valley area of England, i.e. London and the areas a little further upriver. Musically, it was a very expansive sound, with potent, heavy drumming coming to the fore, and keyboards, bass and guitar sounds becoming entangled with each other over a mild, occasionally dreamy-sounding vocal, with often barely discernible lyrics. The scene faded almost as quickly as it had appeared (approx 1990 to early 1992), with the "Grunge" and "Britpop" scenes coming next.

Glad to be of help. "Pearl" actually reminds me a lot of the stuff off Primal Scream's "Vanishing Point" album :
