in which city of the American colonies did the first St. Patrick's day celebration take place?

Tip for best answer: M$0.50
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

The first St. Patrick's day celebration outside of a church took place in Boston on March 17, 1737. The Charitable Irish Society of Boston was founded that year and began right away with a St. Patrick's Day celebration. Many consider it the first St. Patrick's Day Parade in the world, although others say it was not a parade but simple a fund raising or political celebration event.

St Patrick's Day was celebrated as a church holiday for centuries before it became a secular holiday. The first church celebration of the day in the colonies was in 1684 in New York City.

I was surprised to find out that first parade for St. Patrick's Day was in New York.
I was even more surprised that was so long ago (1762).

Even though the Irish waves of immigrants were treated like second class citizens up through the 20th century... it's nice to know that they stayed organized with their Irish and American patriotism and kept this great Catholic celebration alive.

The question actually asks for the first St Patrick's Day Celebration not the first parade. Boston had the first celebration outside of a church (which may or may not have included a parade).
