The very beginning of Ohio State University (OSU) was in 1870 when the Ohio Agricultural and Mechanical College was instituted. Agreeing on the college curriculum was a major problem for those overseeing the operations. The 15 member Board of Trustees were divided as to devote the college to agriculture and mechanical arts or to include language studies. The final vote was 8-7 in favor of including the language arts which has lead to the wide variety of programs offered at the college. The first classes began on September 17, 1873 with 24 students. In 1878 the name was changed to "The Ohio State University''. In 1878 the first graduating class consisted of 6 men and the first woman graduated from OSU in 1879.

In 1950 the university sports teams formerly adopted the moniker "Buckeyes" but the teams had been called that dating back to the 1920s.
