In Ubuntu, how do I remove Evolution without removing my kidneys with it?
You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

I found this on a thread back in 2008.

I don't know _what you are uninstalling, but you should only be
uninstalling these, which will, according to my PC, free 116 MB
evolution, evolution-exchange evolution-common, evolution-plugins,
evolution-webcal, openoffice.org-evolution
You should leave evolution-data-server and evolution-data-server-common
installed, as they are used by other parts of the desktop.

Hope it helps!

M$Now, a longer tale explains that I understand Evolution is somewhat intertwined with other support components of Ubuntu. This is fairly standard practice in my experience. Windows has both Internet Explorer and Outlook Express (mail client) embedded in the OS such that complete removal is inadvisable. Apple has done the same with OSX and Safari. In cases with Windows and OSX, "uninstalling" the packaged extras has often been a matter of disabling the interface and removing a few GUI components to hide it completely. I have not seen any instances where you could *easily* and *completely* remove one of these included components. When I see easy solutions, they tend to just hide the component. When I see complete solutions, they tend to be drastic and possibly crippling to the system.
You mentioned not loosing your kidneys. Well, you might think of Evolution's libraries as your gallbladder. It uses a few resources and does something in the background you can't see until it is a problem. But removal is a serious surgery that may leave you with a bigger problem than you started with. Except that Evolution shouldn't get a nasty infection that lands you in the hospital for emergency surgery...

Alternatively, you can simply go to the Add/Remove screen:
And uninstall Evolution by unchecking the box by the program, and hitting "Apply Changes."
