In this day and age, is it ever okay to get married without a prenuptial agreement?

I know of people who stay in relationships purely so that their assets don't get divided up. It seems that unfortunate situations like this can almost always be avoided. Do you think that prenuptial agreements should be a standard part of wedding planning?

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Let me just say it this way: it better be okay to marry without one. I don't care who I'm marrying and how much money he has, if he stepped to me with a pre-nup, that would be the end of line. But, I'm already married, I'm not a golddigger and I could care less about how rich someone is, so I'll probably never be in that situation. Those who look for partners because of their money should be entitled to whatever is available to them. If a wealthy person gets married without a pre-nup, that's on them. He or she should have to pay the amount that the ex is entitled to. Often, those relationships are like businesses anyway.

Yes two young people who are both starting out with nothing do not need a pre-nup.

I would never have a prenuptial agreement. In my opinion, if you aren't willing to share everything then you shouldn't get married in the first place. I do understand why people with a lot of money would want a prenuptial agreement though. There are a lot of people out there that would spend years pretending to love them just to get a piece of their fortune. If you start a marriage by preparing for a divorce then you really should not be getting married in the first place. It has become too easy for people to get a divorce rather than working on their marriage these days.

I agree with the first answer, two people starting out with nothing have no reason to get a pre-nup. as far as making it standard, I think it puts a bit of a pall on the proceedings to go into it supposing it will end.
