In the movie Dances with Wolves, why were the different indian tribes at war with each other?

A lot of people did not recognize that there were a lot of different "Indian Wars" going on at the same time while the civil war was going on. Everyone was shocked when John Dunbar decided on taking the Frontier as his position. They are not beggars and thieves. They are not the bogeymen they have been made out to be.
The fact is both sides are guilty of mistrust and suspicion, if the Whites see the Indian race as thieves, the Indians see the White Men as fit for nothing dirty men. The problem was the westward expansion

The Indians are not beggars and thieves and they are not the bad people they have been made out to be, they are normal people like you and I that just have different ways of perceiving things. For example, they look at the land as a place where anyone regardless of race, religion, beliefs and so on should be able to live without having to fight for the land.

They were at war with each other because they didn't want their land to be taken from them because they believed that land belonged to everyone. Instead the Indians did not get treated as equals, they got treated worse than the white tribes did. The white tribes felt they were superior to the Indian tribes.
