In the current economic crisis, is it right to have a victory parade for the Steelers?

The parade for Super Bowl XL cost the city of Pittsburgh $45,000 in security and cleanup.  Was Mayor Luke Ravenstahl right or wrong to schedule a parade for Super Bowl XLIII considering the failing economy?
Tip for best answer: M$3.00

Yes, it is right to hold such a celebration. The two playoff games brought serious dollars (that dwarf the $45 k ) to the city coffers, both directly (taxes on ticket and parking sales) and indirectly (meals, lodging, clothing, etc.). The city needs such a celebration for morale and to erase the memory of the stupid ad hoc "celebrations" that took place last night.

Pittsburgh pride is one of the things that makes it a great city to live in. During the time I lived there, there were always fireworks displays when the Steelers or Pirates won a game, and it really evoked a sense of pride and unity within the city. In a time where people are feeling depressed about the economy, giving them something to celebrate will boost morale.

Yes, otherwise the terrorists have won. But seriously, harnessing community synergy to forget about economic woes for a few moments has far more unmeasurable benefits.

It's a GREAT idea... It's a morale booster AND it circulates the money. What a great way to get the economy going in your local area.

BTW: I don't agree that the economy is "failing". The economy is the economy. When you do bad behavior, there are consequences.

Definitely! Think of all the jobs created. And costing a city $45,000 is a shame, but it's nothing compared to the cost of the stimulus plans. The city paid $45,000 to people to work. The more work, the better.

Yes. It only multiplies the crisis if no-one is spending money on anything.

$45k is peanuts in a city budget, and Super Bowl wins don't come along that often.

It's only 45K?  I had no idea it was so cheap.  I don't really see a problem with this.  The money goes into the local economy.  It is mostly paid out to city employee's not some third party out of state group.  It's good for all the business downtown.  And when you win a big event like this you have to celebrate some.

Interesting question!
