In retrospect, should the Vancouver Canucks have made a deal at the trade deadline to solidify their team?

GM Mike Gillis has not been known to make a lot of deals. Was this a mistake in the 2009-2010 season? The goaltending was of course solid. With Roberto Luongo in net (and Andrew Raycroft backing him up) that was one area where nothing needed to be done. But what about the defence and offence? Sami Salo was hampered by injuries and the Canucks did not have much firepower other than the twins. Mikael Samuelsson and Pavol Demitra showed promise but should the team had done more?

Every team takes a look at its needs when nearing the trade deadline. Most teams know what they need to improve their chances of winning in the playoffs and try to fulfill them. That is not as easy to do as it used to be. When the Vancouver Canucks looked at their team and who may be available they had to make a decision. First, what is their position with the salary cap? Do they have enough space under the cap to add players without removing players currently on the roster that are vital to their playoff chances and future successes? Secondly, is their a team willing to deal what the Canucks wanted and at what cost? No team wants to be taken and this is the time of year an average player may hold the most value for a team willing trade because they feel they are out of the playoff picture and looking to rebuild for the future. Trading for an impact player would be difficult for any team, especially within the same Division or Conference. So the bottom line is that I believe they looked into it and for one reason or another found it prohibitive to make a deal.

The Vancouver Canucks played well last season and even in the playoffs, although they were booted out by this year’s finalist in the Stanley Cup Finals, which is the Chicago BlakHawks they also made some brilliant moves recently.
The Canucks used their time on their side very well with their deals.
As the cliché goes “don’t fix that isn’t broken.” The team is definitely not a rebuilding team or a team that have under 0.500 winning percentage and there is no need to get involve with big time deals that might throw them to complications. Besides acquiring big time players may give them more years to allow players to have cohesion and chemistry. Reinforcement is the key to bolster their campaign next season and obviously the Canucks took full advantage of this very well.
They gained experience this season and hopefully the team well fare even better this next season.
