Gollum was originally known as Sméagol, but as he became more and more under the control of the One Ring, he was re-named Gollum because of his habit of making a horrible swallowing noise in his throat.
When he first discovered the Ring he was too weak to resist its power and killed his brother to gain possession of it, which he referred to as his "birthday present".
He then became more and more mean spirited as the Ring took over his life and extended it. He had been exposed to its power for so long that he did not revert back to being a Stoor Hobbit, even when the Ring passed into the hands of Bilbo Baggins.
Gollum was certainly misguided, but the Hobbits understood him only too well, especially Frodo, whose kindness to the wretched creature on occasion brought out the "Sméagol" side of his character once again.
