In honor of Halloween, what is your favorite scary story or book?

Tip for best answer: M$3.25
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Ya can't go wrong with The Legend of Sleepy Hollow by Washington Irving. It's still going strong since 1820:

Also, there's a short story called "The Moon" from Grimm's Complete Fairy Tales. It begins with, "In days gone by there was a land where the nights were always dark, and the sky spread over it like a black cloth, for there the moon never rose, and no star shone in the obscurity." (Grimm's Complete Fairy Tales, Barnes & Noble Books:1993, page 377) How delicious is that? Then there are travelers and dead people, an oak tree, graves, and an explanation for the way in which the moon was hung in the sky.

For DVD giggles and fun, I enjoy Tim Burton's Corpse Bride.

For a non-scary but compelling novel about the love story of a ghost, I have very much enjoyed reading The Mercy of Thin Air by Ronlyn Domingue (New York: Washington Square Press, 2005):

Grimm's original fairy tales aka Grimms Märchen. Not this Americanized little kid version, I mean the real Grimm's Fairy Tales published in 1812 in German.

It was easier to be frightened 20 or 30 years ago, so I'd say Rosemary's Baby and The Exorcist were two which scared the wits out of me at the time. Now, after years of media and real life frights, I'm not as easily impressed.

The book "IT" by Stephen King creeped me out the most of any horror story. Something pretending to be a clown (not scared of clowns but some people are) and killing kids is scar

I don't remember the name of the story, but it involved a child developing what she thought was painful acne and while taking a bath, the "pimples" popped. They weren't pimples, though, they were spiders that had just hatched under her skin. That one made me shiver for a couple of days afterward.

That's from Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark! I forget which edition it was in, but that one creeped me out to no end, too.

The Scary Stories To Tell in The Dark series by Alvin Schwartz. It terrified a generation of young kids. The stories were bad enough, but it had some of the most terrifying illustrations accompanying them. Stephen Gammell is an evil genius, his drawings still creep me out even as an adult. The books were compilations of various urban myths and folklore, so occasionally you'd run into the story again and have terrifying flashbacks to whatever demented illustation accompanied that particular story. The red ribbon, spider bite, and sewer rat stories all stuck with me for a long time. It was the perfect book to read under the covers with a flashlight in the middle of October, though of course, it was a bit tough getting to sleep after that...

A woman is driving home alone late at night when a truck starts following her closely. Periodically, the truck is flashing his brights. She starts getting nervous as the truck is following her at every turn. Finally she pulls into her driveway and the man in the truck is still behind her. She is terrified as he gets out of his truck and comes up to her car, opening the back door -- when a man runs out! The man in the truck explains that there was a kille rin her backseat and each time he rose up to strike her, he would flash his brights and he would get scared. The truck guy saved her life from a psycho in the backseat!!! AHHHHH!!!!!!

I remember that second illustration. Okay... time to visit the library and see if I can find this book. I love horror stories and this time of year!
