Interesting question there buckets. As another fan of the God of War game series, I also had myself quite absorbed to the story of the game spending nights bent on finishing the game.
In the story of God of War (first in the series), Kratos was determined to kill Ares mainly on two reasons namely for the sake of revenge and because of the influence of Athena. The first is actually the primary reason as Ares tricked Kratos into killing his own wife and daughter for the process of making him the ultimate warrior or Ares’ perfect warrior puppet. When Kratos accidentally committed the murder, he held a deep grudge and sworn revenge towards killing Ares. The second was because of Athena’s influence using him as a mean to throw off Ares’ minions that are attacking Athens. In the end, Kratos was able to become a demi-god through the content of the Pandora’s Box and exact his revenge on Ares.
On the latter games on the God of War franchise, this revenge was repeated though as part of a test against Kratos.
