In French, if you want to declare something as male or female, or as singular and plural, the difference is usually in the form of the word. For example, if you want to declare a noun as being masculine, one clue you can use is to look at their suffix. For example, nouns ending in –eau, -eaux, -age, -ment are usually masline, whereas nouns ending in –e, -ure, -ence, -ance, -té, -ette, -ion are usually feminine.
You can also make feminine nouns out of the masculine, by adding an e to the end of the masculine noun.
While these rules aren’t definite, it is always best to memorize the list of nouns to get it right.
For plural forms, an “s”, “x”, -aux, ne, nes are usually added to words to make it plural, though these are very definite. Certain words ending with certain forms will have specific plural forms added to them.
