In fact, does anyone know where our custom of handshaking comes from?

The origin of the handshake is pretty much lost in time. No-one is truly sure of where it originated. However there are two competing theories. One theory is of a medieval origin, that the handshake was a indication that there were no hidden weapons and a gesture of peace. Another theory is that it stemmed from a Babylonian ritual whereby the king clasped the hand of the statue of the god during the New Year festival to transfer authority for the coming year. This is also supported by fact that the Egytptian hieroglyph of an extended hand represents the word ‘give’ and is derived from “the shaking of hands which represented the legend of the handing over of power from a god to an early earthly? ruler.”
