In Ceramics, What is Wedging?

Tip for best answer: M$0.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Wedging is a process which is used to prepare clay for working. Without being wedged, clay will have an uneven texture which makes it hard to work with, and it could potentially develop problems as it is worked and fired.

Wedging is repeatedly slamming the wet clay on a hard surface to force the particles to realign into layers.

Wedging is the process of kneading the clay with the hands. The purpose is to remove air bubbles, it wakes up the particles getting them ready for the wheel, and ensure a homogeneous mass (no wet or dry spots.
