In Basketball...when did this idea to call assists "dimes" start and where does the word come from?

"Dropping a dime" came from a term in the 1960's which someone would tip off the authorities about the wrongdoings of a particular person.
That person would "drop a dime" and inform the police or lawmakers that a law was being violated.
In essence, this was an "assist" to the law to catch the person.
Over time the term began to be associated to basketball, being that it counted assists. So, we can see the correlation of "drop a dime" from a legal sense to the more modern sense of assisting someone in basketball.
