Right now, the GOP is a party in disarray. Without a President from the same party, the party has no definitive leader. That's why you're seeing people like Rush Limbaugh, Dick Cheney, and Sean Hannity speaking and having people listen.
So at the moment, the party is trying to find its identity. On the one hand, you have people like those three who have a big microphone advocating purging the moderates from the party (many of whom were beaten in the past two election cycles). And on the other hand, you have the campaign committee leaders like John Cornyn and Pete Sessions who saw the Democrats recruit people outside their typical ideological spectrum in 2006 and 2008 who went into Republican districts and thrashed the incumbent.
The Republicans right now are trying to figure out where they are as a party. And they will either decide to be ideologically pure and purge their moderates, or they will decide to make themselves a big tent party and try to recruit moderate candidates who actually have a chance to win in Democratic districts.
And right now, nobody knows where the party will land on that decision. Personally, as a Democrat, I am strongly hoping they'll go with ideological purity so we can keep winning elections, but we'll see if they decide to become more pragmatic.
