It depends on what type of games you enjoy and whether or not you plan on using Xbox Live.

If you are planning on using XBox live, I'd recommend Halo 3, Gears of War 2, and Call of Duty 4. All three not only include fantastic single player experiences, but also have an online component that will keep you coming back to them many months or even years later.

If you aren't planning on using X-Box Live, I'd recommend Bioshock, Fallout 3, and perhaps GTA4. Bioshock simply because its one of the best story driven first person shooters out there that is immensely replayable and is simply a game that no gamer should not experience. Fallout 3 because it's long, has thrilling RPG/Shooter hybrid gameplay, and is one of the most immersive games on the platform. GTA4 is kind of a toss up because I personally don't like it that much, but I know that I'm in the vast minority when it comes to that opinion. Regardless, it's lengthy, has a ton of stuff to do even after you finish the main story, and is a great game to just mess around in.

Also, if you haven't played Half-Life 2 yet, I highly recommend getting The Orange Box since you're getting Half-Life 2 plus its two add-ons, in addition to one of the most unique games of 2007 in Portal, as well as an extremely fun multiplayer shooter in Team Fortress 2, all for a very low price.

If those don't sound appealing, could you perhaps put a list of genres that you like?

Mitchell, solid choices and good answer! Good to break it down into two groups of people: online players, and offline.

Halo Wars because it is a new version of Halo and others will be playing. It's a great game and you will not be the only one new to it since it just came out. Plus you can play multiplayer scrims which is always fun.

Fable 2 if you like the storyline type games. This took me around 24 playing hours to complete. It's a very detailed game where you are a hero that can take a noble path or a corrupt path, the choice is yours. Also you may socialize with others over Xbox live, you may also join their worlds as a sidekick type.

Madden 2009 is awesome for any football fan! It is also a good game to play with your friends on the off season!

Hope this helps.

I recently purchased a 360 as well and I'm working my way through Fable 2 right now. It is fantastic. I played Fallout 3 last fall and enjoyed that too.

You're right about Halo Wars. If the Asker is trying to be really current; that's a great choice. Resident Evil 5 also just came out.

Yes Fable 2 is a very excellent game. If you need any help on it just let me know. I've played completed it twice so far and soon I'll be able to buy the expansion quests for it.

BioShock should be one. It is quite possibly one of the greatest games ever made. It's very fun to play, hilarious at some times, deep at others, and has a great story.

Otherwise, it depends on your interests:

If you're into FPS, get at least one of the following: Halo 3, Call Of Duty 4 or 5, FarCry 2 or Gears of War.

RPG's: Oblivion, Fallout 3,or Fable 2

Shooter/Adventure: Grand Theft Auto or Resident Evil 5

My suggestion overall: BioShock, Grand Theft Auto IV, and Halo 3.

Grand Theft Auto is an icon, and it lives up to the rest of the series. They also recently released an update with lots of new material.
Halo is also an icon. It's campaign is equally fun with 1, 2, 3, or 4 people, and I find that it has the most fun multiplayer out of any FPS, because the people in it aren't too intense (as often happens in COD) and the maps and vehicles are awesome.

All the games I suggested are rated M. If that's a problem, or if you like other genres, just comment and I'll try to help you out.
