I'm thinking about visiting Oregon since I've never gone. What is the one thing I really need to do/see there?

Pack a lunch and sit somewhere along the waterfront, downtown Portland.
Just watch people. In your hotel room watch local channels and pay attention to the commercials.
Rocks are rocks, trees are trees, grass is grass and dirt is dirt wherever you go. What makes it different are the people.
And sometimes the animals (including the bugs).
I'm sure there are buildings and scenery or exhibits and events that would be worth participating in, but it's the people that make the place.
If you time it right you might actually be in town for the Nude Bike Ride (1000+ people riding bicycles nude through town) or the Zombie Walk around Halloween (hundreds dressed up as Zombies parading through town).
See the people. Enjoy your visit. :)
