I'm ready for a new book! What should it be?

Books that I've enjoyed:

* The Time-Traveller's Wife
* The Prestige
* Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell
* The 13th Tale
* Midnight in the Garden of Good & Evil

(Please offer unique book ideas -- ones that I may not run across by scanning Topseller Lists. Thanks!)

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

I've also read Time Traveler's wife, The Prestige (very awesome book), JS & MN. If you like that kind of thing, then may I humbly invite you to have a look at this:

(disclaimer: I am the author - but based on your tastes I believe you may enjoy them :) )

Try 'The Terror' by Dan Simmons. Great historical fiction. In the same vein, 'Life of Pi' by Yann Martel.

I just finished reading "The Terror" (audiobook) this morning - and LOVED it. Thanks so much for this tip. My wife and I are now huge Dan Simmons fans -- and we also just finished reading his new book, "Drood" which is also dark and amazingly well written.

As Stephen King wrote --> "I am in awe of Dan Simmons."

Thanks for the great tip, Chuck D. Any other recommendations??

I'd recommend Choke or Lullaby or Invisible Monsters(one of his best) from Chuck Palahniuk. He is a great author and I love all his books(I've read every single one). They just made a movie from Choke, although I haven't seen it, and they made a movie from Fight Club a while back.

You will love these books, and probably everything else this author has even done.

Two of the most amazing books I've come across:

The Long Walk by Slavomir Rawicz.

And

Man's Search for Meaning by Viktor Frankl

Both are empowering and life-affirming. See their Amazon descriptions in the links.

Might I suggest you visit http://www.webscription.net/c-1-free-library.aspx and pick up free, no-DRM, e-books which you can read on phones, PDAs, Kindles, laptops (PCs, Mac and Linux) and desktops? Specifically, BORN TO RUN and THE MOUNTAINS OF MOURNING are the best in the collection based on your list.

A Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving. It's one of my favorites.

The best book I have read lately was "The Edge of Reason" by Melinda Snodgrass. Go to Amazon and read the reviews. Be sure to read the later reviews too the first ones are pretensiously critical.

I've really enjoyed Ken Follett's two book "series". You don't necessarily have to read the first one, Pillars of the Earth, but I think it definitely helps to put World Without End into perspective.
These are both very long books, and cover a large span of time. Be aware that they are not for the faint of heart (raping and pillaging abound). But I found that I could barely put these books down.

The Pillars of the Earth - http://www.amazon.com/Pillars-Earth-Deluxe-Oprahs-Book/dp/0451225244

World Without End - http://www.amazon.com/World-Without-End-Ken-Follett/dp/045122499X
