I'm new to listening to jazz music.
What artists or bands should I definitely listen to or be aware of?

Any Jazz newbie should take into consideration the Mount Rushmore of artists: Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Thelonious Monk, and . I recommend starting with the 1959 Miles Davis album Kind of Blue, which many Jazz critics call the best album of all time, and my personal favorite. Miles has an impressive catalog of recordings which spans four decades and includes many seminal albums.
Another fine album to get started on is the 1959 John Coltrane album Giant Steps. This album is considered a watershed for Jazz music and an illustration of his exceptional technical abilities. Monk and Ellington were both piano players who were pioneers for different reasons. Duke was a composer, director, lyricist, arranger, and accomplished player. Monk was known for his own specific musical technique of "smashing" notes on the piano to create discordant sounds.
