I'm in the market for an external hard drive. WD, Seagate? Which is best model/value?

Tip for best answer: M$0.25
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

The eSATA connection is far faster, but the USB connection allows use on other computers.

Stay away from WD. They reduce warranty coverage to 1 year only for their external enclosures.

I've lost far more external hard drives than internal...and only managed to get _one_ replaced under warranty. Of the two WD drives I lost, I had to spend over $2,000 to get the data back.

Seagate has a 1.5TB model with eSATA, FW400, and USB2.0.

Seagate FreeAgent XTreme 1.5TB, $175 at Amazon, free shipping if you have Prime membership.

I have a Seagate FreeAgent 250GB USB for over 2 years. It is very quiet operating and works like a charm. I got it for $89 at the dell.com website by googling it and finding the best price with shopping results listing.

I'm sure you can get a bigger 1TB drive now for about the same price.

www.Newegg.com has very competitive prices and sometimes offers free shipping.
