I'm getting a lot of spinning beach balls on my iMac. Is there anything I can do to stop this?

I've started getting a lot of spinning beach balls on my iMac where the system effectively freezes for a few seconds. Is there anything I can do to work out why this is happening and then to stop it?

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

There are two main causes for the "Spinning Beach Ball of Death":

1. You may be running too many applications at once. Make sure to close any applications that you aren't currently using in order to free up more processing speed.

2. You may be running out of free disk space or not have enough RAM. Check how much space you have left on your hard drive and delete anything that is superfluous or that you have somewhere else.

If you are getting the spinning wheel for to other reasons, this article has some good troubleshooting tips for solutions:

The way you fix these problems on a PC is simply to add more RAM or a faster CPU, but on a mac those options aren't available. You have two options to keep from running into slow behavior. Don't run as many programs or programs that require a lot of RAM, or get a faster imac.

Can you give some more information re. your setup, What is your iMac model, OS version? Does the beach ball appear when running a specific app, or performing some action?

Does this happen when you're connected to the internet? Try turning off your wifi connection / unplugging ethernet. Still a problem?

Try unplugging any external devices (HDDs, printers, etc). Does this resolve the problem? If so, plug them back in one at at time to figure out which one is at fault.

Open the Console application and review the All Messages section. Do you see anything that might indicate a problem at the time the beach ball appeared?
